MedWE Policy Study on Climate Crisis and Gender Equality

2025 07 / 03

Context

A new policy study highlights the critical intersection between gender equality and climate change, emphasizing the disproportionate impact of the climate crisis on women, particularly those living in climate-vulnerable rural areas.

This study was established in the framework of the Mediterranean Women Empowerment (MedWE) Programme, a joint initiative of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the European Institute for the Mediterranean (IEMed). The authors from prominent research institutions explore the challenges women face in the Mediterranean, particularly in the MENA region.

The publication stems from discussions held during the session "Climate Crisis and Gender Equality in the Euro-Mediterranean Region: Emerging Security Risks", which took place as part of the High-Level Conference on Women for the Mediterranean on 30-31 May 2024, co-organized by the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM) and the Commissioner for Gender Equality of the Republic of Cyprus. The event brought together experts from across the region to share insights, challenges, and policy recommendations, underlining the importance of strengthening women's participation in climate decision-making.

Key Findings

  • A crucial role in climate action: Research shows that women’s leadership in climate policies enhances their effectiveness, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, water management, and renewable energy, where they are disproportionately affected.
  • Persistent barriers: Despite their potential to drive sustainable solutions, women remain underrepresented in green sectors and face significant obstacles, including limited access to finance and technology.

Assessment

Discussions highlighted the urgent need to empower women in climate decision-making processes to ensure a more effective and inclusive response to the environmental and security challenges facing the Euro-Mediterranean region.
