Description
According to the European Commission, Nature-based Solutions (NbS) are "Solutions that are inspired and supported by nature, which are cost-effective, simultaneously provide environmental, social and economic benefits and help build resilience. Such solutions bring more, and more diverse, nature and natural features and processes into cities, landscapes and seascapes, through locally adapted, resource-efficient and systemic interventions."
NbS aim to restore, protect, or manage ecosystems to help mitigate and adapt to issues such as climate change, water management, disaster risk reduction, and urban challenges. These solutions work by integrating natural systems into urban planning, infrastructure, and land-use practices. They include actions like urban green spaces, reforestation, wetlands restoration, and sustainable agriculture.
The European Commission emphasizes that NbS offer multiple benefits, including increased resilience to climate impacts, enhanced biodiversity, improved water quality, and better human health, all while contributing to sustainable development goals.
